After two years of planning with the City, San Antonio Street Art Initiative has finally been approved to develop San Antonio’s first art park. The park will be founded in street art, and is set to include a breakdancing pad and SA’s first art basketball court. Foundationally, it will erect 10 permanent street art walls that will be painted and re-painted annually during SASA’s Largest Outdoor Gallery in Texas Program. The program, now in its sixth year, has long needed a reliable and consistent home to which its ever growing artist roster can depend on. During Phase VI, we celebrated the success in attaining this goal.
LOGIT serves as SASA’s annual fundraiser and helps keep their year long Brick By Brick Job Placement and Career Development Program plentiful and active for the artist careers that it serves. The annual Largest Outdoor Gallery in Texas (LOGIT) event hosts an annual block party every year with at least 10 walls being painted in a concentrated area by local, national and international artists. This year, LOGIT showcased its largest footprint to date with not just one activation, but eight. The activation locations include, Healy Murphy Park, Booker Alley, Local Sprout, Pulp Coffee, a street closure at Chestnut and Nolan, and a large-scale activation at the Cruising Kitchens parking lot and warehouse.
At these activations, LOGIT hosted over 20 street artists painting, DJ’s, food trucks, breakdancing demos, a glow roll and bike showcase, vendors, ramps for BMX bikers and skateboarders, a mobile gaming truck, a cool kids corner, the cannibal bike crew activating their race track for the first time and an art print fair with over 30 artists and hundreds of local prints for sale. Partners include: Mural Ride, Cruising Kitchens, Battle of the Alamo Breakdancing, Face Cake, Krewline, Video Madness Mobile Gaming Experience, and Rent Event. Sponsors include: Liquid Death, Community First Health Plans, Cricket, and Sanger & Altgelt.
Along with the street art park announcement, SASA announced that it has uprooted its Southtown Arts District headquarters to plant its roots on the East Side. This allows close proximity to their park and allows them to work closely with Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez to bring color and beauty to D2.
