ABOUT THE PROGRAM
This highly competitive recruitment program seeks out gifted and talented high school students to participate in an after school program that teaches basics in spray paint handling, fine art techniques and sole proprietor skills. The program features hands-on art projects, sponsored by high profile or corporate brands that lend themselves to impressive resume building collateral in attempt to give these students a head start in pursuing their art careers.
Taught in four-week cycles, the program is mentored by distinguished artist and mentor of over 35 years, Rubio® and students participate in intensive studio practicum, complete with deadlines and time management demands conducive to building leadership and entrepreneurial skills. Students are encouraged to stick with the program to continually build their entrepreneurial assets including CVs, bios, headshots, marketing tools, accounting strategies, and many other tools needed to succeed as a full-time artist. SASAI believes empowering developing artists this way early in life will not only serve the artists, but also serve San Antonio, as they are the next generation of street artists that will keep ‘San Antonio Colorful’.
Ideally, once these developing artists are ready, they too, can one day participate in our LARGEST OUTDOOR GALLERY IN TEXAS™ Program while continually taking their careers to new heights.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Meet our Artist-in-Residence, RUBIO®. With over 35 years of mentorship experience with San Antonio’s creative youths and countless accolades attached to himself and his students, SASAI could not be more excited to have this San Antonio art icon as part of our new staff. With unparalleled experience in public art design, production and installation, Rubio’s mentorship areas of expertise include teaching high school youth in studio art techniques, public art commissions and early exhibition experiences. He has worked for many of San Antonio’s Non-Profit Organizations including, Community Cultural Arts Organization, Guadalupe Cultural Arts Organization, San Anto Cultural Arts Organization, and Blue Star Contemporary, MOSAIC Student Artist Program.
RUBIO®, is a native born San Antonio artist, muralist and mentor. Rubio began his career as a young mural student working with Community Cultural Arts Organization based in the West Side of San Antonio. True to the nature of Chicano Art, his early paintings reflect a political and urban contemporary aesthetic memorable in color and rich in his community, roots, and experience. In recent years, his paintings have taken on more fluid abstract shapes, filled with saturated color and his signature curvilinear designs. RUBIO® is a pioneering contributor to the Chicano Art Movement and has solidified himself as one of the all time greats for the genre.
Rubio’s artwork has been exhibited locally at the San Antonio Museum of Art, the McNay Art Museum and Blue Star Contemporary. His work is also featured in national touring exhibitions, including those of the private collections of Cheech Marin and Joe A. Diaz. Rubio has received national recognition with grants from the Joan Mitchell Foundation and the Vermont Studio Center Fellowship. In 2007, RUBIO® was curated into the Artpace International Artist-in-Residency Program and received an Artpace, London Travel Grant. In March 2011, RUBIO® founded and curated R Space, and Rubio Gallery South, which presents the debut exhibitions of undiscovered, developing and emerging local artists. Today, RUBIO® is a highly success full-time artist, is highly sought after by respected collectors and is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of young artists, especially those who come from marginalized neighborhoods and backgrounds.
